In a notable development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly young people's protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.
Terms of the New Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political class. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with several leading political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
