A group of seven alleged individuals of Germany's left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the left-wing extremist organization the Antifa Ost network went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting sites in Germany and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities overseen by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the organization, Lina E., emerged as a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
